Find out when it might be time to turn to the dental professionals for a whiter smile.
Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments that our family dentist Dr. Ahmed ElSayed offers in Madera, CA. It seems that everyone wants to get a brighter smile. While there are so many at-home whitening options to help you achieve a brighter smile not all of them are able to effectively remove darker and more stubborn stains. This is where this cosmetic dentistry procedure can help.
Many people turn to in-office teeth whitening because they can sit back while our Madera, CA, cosmetic dentist does all the work. It’s truly the fastest way to get your smile several shades whiter. A single one-hour whitening session could remove those stubborn stains and give you the results you are looking for.
However, in-office whitening does require coming into our office for an hour or more for treatment, and this whitening method is more expensive than other options. Therefore, if you are looking for an effective but budget-conscious whitening treatment that doesn’t require spending a lot of time in the dental chair then our home whitening kit may be the best option for you.
How do professional home whitening kits work?
You won’t be able to find our whitening kits on any drugstore shelf. Besides offering a stronger whitening gel our dentist will also take impressions of your teeth to make custom-fitted whitening trays. Normal commercial whitening kits offer one-size-fits-all trays; however, custom trays ensure that all surfaces of the teeth come in contact with the whitening gel for more even results.
Once your trays have been made, you will come back into the office so that we can give you full instructions on how to use the whitening kit to achieve the best results. Before whitening your teeth each night you will want to brush and floss.
You will typically need to wear your whitening trays 30 minutes a day for two weeks before seeing results. Some whitening trays may be worn overnight. After whitening treatment you will want to avoid food or drinks for at least 30 minutes.
If you are dealing with a dull, yellowing smile in Madera, CA, then it might be time to talk with our dental team to find out if you are an ideal candidate for professional teeth whitening. Call Madera Family Dental Care today to learn more about this cosmetic dentistry procedure.
Whether you are just looking to brighten a dull, yellowing smile or you have a special occasion coming up, there are many reasons people turn to our Madera, CA, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Ahmed ElSayed, to get professional teeth whitening. Sure, you could whiten your teeth at home, however, if you are looking to get a brighter smile quickly, there is no better option than in-office whitening. Read on to learn why
What kinds of stains can professional teeth whitening treat?
The benefit of turning to your dentist in Madera, CA, for whitening treatment is that this powerful system can target more serious stains that may not respond as well to at-home whitening treatment. While it is true that yellow stains do respond the best to bleaching, even brown stains can be treated with teeth whitening. Just remember: the darker the stain the more whitening sessions you may require before you get the results you want.
What should I expect from whitening treatment?
This will depend on whether you choose to have our dentist whiten your teeth right here in our office or whether you want to get at-home whitening from us. In-office whitening is more expensive than professional at-home systems because you will often see visible results in just one session. Although in-office is the fastest way to get a whiter smile if you aren’t on a time crunch and are on a budget, than our at-home whitening system may be a better option for you.
With our in-office whitening system, you can expect the process to take anywhere from 45 minutes to one hour. We will need to clean the teeth and remove any plaque and tartar buildup beforehand. From there, we will place a protective barrier over the gums and lips before placing the bleaching gel over your smile. The bleaching gel will then be left on for an extended period of time before being rinsed off and reapplied. Sometimes a light is directed over the teeth to activate the gel.
With our at-home system, we will provide you with custom-fitted, sometimes pre-filled whitening trays so all that you have to do is pop the trays into your mouth when it’s most convenient for you.

Like other aspects of our lives, aging can take a toll on our smile. Over a lifetime the effects of disease, teeth wearing and the foods we eat can cause our teeth and gums to look unattractive.
Here are 3 of the most common age-related dental problems and how we can help you "turn back the clock" on each one.
Discoloration. Teeth can dull and grow darker over time. And not just from what we eat or drink—age-related structural changes in the tooth can also cause discoloration. We can often alleviate external staining temporarily with teeth whitening. If the staining is heavy or it originates inside the tooth, then we can install life-like porcelain veneers or crowns to cover the discoloration. We can also use composite dental materials to alter the color of one darkened tooth so that it doesn't stand out from the rest of your teeth.
Wearing. Our teeth naturally wear down over time. If the wearing is excessive, though, teeth can look shorter and less youthful. Again, we can use veneers or crowns to change a tooth's outward appearance and make them look longer. We can also employ enamel contouring and reshaping that smoothes out sharper edges caused by wearing to give your teeth a softer, more youthful look.
Receding gums. On the other end of the spectrum, gums that have shrunk back or receded from the teeth can make them look much larger and unattractive. Our first step is to treat any gum disease present—the most common cause of recession—which often helps the tissues to regenerate. If your case is more advanced, though, you may also need grafting surgery to restore lost gum tissue. Using in-depth microsurgical techniques, surgeons attach grafted gum tissue at the recession site. Over time new tissue will grow, restoring adequate gum coverage.
You can also improve your appearance at any age with orthodontics. Besides a more attractive smile, properly aligned teeth tend to wear more slowly and evenly. This and proper daily oral hygiene and regular dental care can keep your teeth looking younger even in your later years.

Professional Teeth Whitening: This procedure turns dull yellow teeth into a brilliant, white smile that you can be proud to show to the world! Professional teeth whitening allows you to whiten your smile up to 8 shades brighter with results that can last up to 5 years. It’s quick too, with in-office treatment taking only about an hour. Imagine a dazzling smile in just sixty minutes! In addition to the in-office whitening treatment, Dr. ElSayed also offers a convenient take-home whitening kit, perfect if you want to whiten at your own pace, in the privacy of your home.
Porcelain Veneers and Lumineers: To help you achieve a celebrity-perfect smile, these thin laminates of sparkling, translucent porcelain are cemented on to the front surfaces of your teeth. Porcelain is stain-resistant, so you can keep your bright, beautiful smile for years after treatment! Veneers and lumineers can cover up cracks, fracture lines, chips, tooth wear, and other unsightly issues, making your smile perfect and beautifully natural.
Dental Implants: With a natural look and function, implants replace the teeth that you have lost, helping you regain a whole, beautiful smile. Implants are fully embedded in bone, making them permanent, unmoving fixtures, and since they become a permanent part of your smile, you can brush and floss them just like your natural teeth! Dental implants can also help restore the firm jawline and youthful contours of your face. They are the closest alternative to your natural teeth, both in appearance and how they work.

A relatively easy and inexpensive way to improve your smile is to whiten your teeth. In fact, you may even be able to do it yourself at home. Although there are differences between at-home and professional whitening, the former can still be effective.
That effectiveness, though, might be dependent on how well you understand what home whitening can do and what it can’t. So before you purchase your kit, here are a few things to know about DIY teeth whitening.
Home kits are safe—when used as directed. Although nothing in life is completely risk-free, home whitening kits are relatively safe. But only if you follow the directions: If you overuse the bleaching solution beyond its intended use, you could wind up with permanent damage to your tooth enamel that can be costly to treat.
Bleaching solutions are relatively mild. Nearly all home kits use carbamide peroxide, a form of hydrogen peroxide, as their bleaching agent. Home kits usually contain no more than 10% of this agent, much lower than professional solutions. Used as directed, this amount of bleaching agent poses little to no risk to dental or general health. On the other hand, the weaker home kit solution does limit the extent of brightness you can achieve compared to stronger professional treatments.
For top results (or certain conditions), consider professional whitening. While you can obtain good results with a home whitening kit, professional whitening provides more precise brightness control and range, and may possibly last longer. That’s because your dentist has more advanced techniques and equipment, as well as stronger bleaching solutions. And, if your discoloration originates inside your teeth, a home kit won’t help—only a dentist can address that kind of discoloration.
Even if you decide to “go solo,” your dentist can still give you advice on what to look for in a home kit, as well as tips for the actual procedure. But whether you whiten at home or let your dentist do it, teeth whitening can take years off your smile and give you a more attractive look.
